Adcirca is a PDE5 (phosphodiesterase type-5) inhibitor. This is an enzyme that degrades cGMP. The drug is used for the treatment of patients with pulmonary-arterial hypertension. This is a condition that is caused by the up-regulation of the PDE5. The gene expression of PDE5 leads to vasoconstriction within the lungs. The generic drug acts by inhibiting this gene expression (PDE5) and results in an increase in cGMP concentration. This leads to vasodilatation effect and the vascular smooth-muscles in the lungs become relaxed. Overall, there is vasodilatation of the vascular bed in the lungs. Adcirca Side Effects and Precautions
