Gemzar Information

Gemzar is a neucleoside metabolic inhibitor used as an adjuvant therapy in the treatment of ovarian cancer, non-small cell lung cancer, metastatic breast cancer and pancreatic cancer. It inhibits the growth of cancer cells. It is given with another chemotherapy drug called Carboplatin in patients with advanced ovarian cancer, who have received platinum based treatment for atleast 6 months. It is used as a first line of treatment with other chemotherapy drugs like, Cisplatin and Paclitaxel, to treat non-small cell lung cancer and metastatic breast cancer respectively. It may also be used singly in patients with locally advanced or metastatic adenocarcinoma of the pancreas or bladder cancer. The generic drug is now available in stores. It is a prescription drug.

Gemzar Side Effects and Precautions

The most common side effect of Gemcitabine is a decreased blood count. Others include fever, vomiting, nausea, loss of appetite, low blood count, presence of blood or proteins in urine, difficulty in breathing, mouth sores, hair loss etc. Oedema or rash may also occur. These side effects are reversible once the drug is stopped. However, check with your physician when the symptoms are severe, when not responding to the prescribed medicines or if any unusual symptoms are noted.

Hepatotoxic symptoms (liver symptoms) are rare. Precautions to be taken before using Gemcitabine are to inform your doctor about other medication you are on, especially if you are taking aspirin or aspirin containing drugs. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or lactating. Vaccines are not to be taken during treatment. Check if you are allergic to the drug before you buy Gemzar.

In patients with non small cell lung cancer 1000 mg/m2 is infused over 30 minutes IV on days 1, 8, and 15 in a 4 week schedule. After Gemzar, Cisplatin is administered IV on day 1. In a 3 week schedule 1250 m/m2 is given IV on days 1 and 8. This is followed by 100 mg/m2 of Cisplatin IV. In pancreatic cancer, 1000 mg/m2 is induced for 30 minute/week for 7 weeks.
