Namenda Information
Namenda is used for treatment of dementia that is associated with Alzheimer's disease. It is effective in treating dementia that is moderate to severe. The drug is used for treating other symptoms of Alzheimer's disease as well. The drug is an antagonist to NMDA (that is N-methyl D-aspartate) receptor. By antagonizing the effects of this receptor, this generic drug restores the functions of the nerve cells that are damaged. Thus, the drug reduces the excitatory signals that occur abnormally. By modulating the NMDA receptor, the drug helps in controlling the disease symptoms.
Namenda Side Effects and Precautions
Common and less-serious side effects of Memantine are vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, loss of appetite, constipation, tiredness, dizziness, faster heart rate, weight loss, joint pain, easy bleeding/ bruising, swelling in the hands/ feet, unusual weakness, aggression or anxiety. Namenda may result in skin rashes, excessive urination or reddening/ swelling around the eyes. Serious effects of the drug include chest pain, chest tightness, fever, cough, trouble in breathing or fast heart rate. Memantine may also result in serious effects like confusion, hallucination, convulsions, lack of coordination, sudden numbness, weakness, less or no urination, weakness, pale skin or bleeding/ bruising easily. Do not buy Namenda if you are allergic to it. Also, discuss your medical history with your doctor before starting the treatment, especially if you have cataract, epilepsy etc.
Dosage Information For Namenda
The recommended dose of Namenda is a starting dose of 5 mg which is administered once daily. The target dose of the drug is recommended to be 20 mg per day. Thus, the dose increment is done gradually by 5 mg each week. Therefore, the dose is 5 mg in week 1 (once daily) and 10 mg in week 2, 15 mg in week 3 and 20 mg in week 4, given twice daily.
