Prandin is a drug used singly or as an adjuvant to treat type 2 diabetes. The drug is from a group called meglitinides. When used as a combination drug it may be used with Glucophage. In type 2 diabetes glucose intolerance is due to reduction in insulin secretion by the pancreas after meals. The cells in the body resist the action of the insulin. This leads to high glucose levels. Prandin stimulates the pancreas to produce insulin and it acts better in persons with a moderate level of glucose in blood. Prandin Side Effects and Precautions
The side effects of Repaglinide include gastric upset, nausea, vomiting, indigestion, yellowing of skin/eyes and joint pains. Others include cold or flu like symptoms, diarrhea and back pain. Repaglinide should not be used above the indicated dose as it leads to a low sugar state resulting in confusion, seizures, changes in behavior or loss of consciousness. Dosage Information For Prandin
Dosage for Prandin is not fixed as such. In case of patients who have not been treated so far or if the HbA1c is less than 8% the drug is initiated with 0.5 mg with each meal. Those patients who have received treatment or HbA1c is more than or is 8%, the initiating dosage is 1 mg or 2 mg after each meal. Dose adjustment is made on a weekly basis when required. It should not exceed 16 mg/day. When patients on one anti-diabetic drug switch to Prandin they can take Prandin in the above mentioned dosage the day after they have stopped the other drug they need to be closely observed due to overlapping of drug effects.
