Proscar is an inhibitor of Type-II 5-alpha reductase enzyme. It is referred to as an anti-androgen. The drug is used for the treatment of BPH (benign prostatic-hyperplasia). It is used in treatment of men with enlarged prostate. The drug is recommended for improving the symptoms and for reducing the risk to acute urinary-retention and risk of surgery (or prostatectomy). The generic drug is administered along with an alpha-blocker (doxazosin). The drug inhibits the Type-II 5-alpha reductase enzyme and thus blocks the conversion of testosterone to DHT (that is dihydrotestosterone). This helps in controlling the androgenic effect.
