Purinethol Information

Purinethol is a thiopurine drug. It is an immune-suppressive agent. It is used as a maintenance therapy for acute lymphatic-leukemia (including lymphocytic and lymphoblastic leukemia). The drug is used in a combination regimen. However, the drug is not used for treatment or prophylaxis of CNS (central nervous system) leukemia. The generic drug's ribonucleotide acts by inhibiting the synthesis as well as metabolism of the purine nucleotides. This leads to alterations in the synthesis and functioning of the DNA and RNA. Thus, the drug interferes with the inter-conversion of nucleotide and synthesis of glycoprotein. Now many reputed pharmacy stores have cheap Purinethol available.

Purinethol Side Effects and Precautions

Most commonly reported side effects of Mercaptopurine are weakness, unusual tiredness and yellowing of the skin or eyes. Less common side effects of the drug include no appetite, nausea/ vomiting, joint pain, swelling in the lower-legs or on the feet, headache or diarrhea. Purinethol may also lead to darkening of your skin, itching or skin rashes.

Other less common side effects of Mercaptopurine are fever/ chills, lower-back pain, difficult/ painful urination, unexplained bruising/ bleeding, black/ tarry stools, blood in urine/ stools, pin-point red-spots on your skin, hoarseness or cough. Do not (or avoid) buy Purinethol if you have allergy to its contents. Inform your doctor if any of the above mentioned effects of the drug become worse or bothersome. Also, before beginning the treatment, discuss your medical-history with your doctor.

Dosage Information For Purinethol

For maintenance therapy, the dose of Purinethol is recommended to be 1.5 mg/kg to 2.5 mg/kg per day. This is administered as a single dose on a daily basis. For patients with renal impairment or hepatic impairment, it is recommended that the drug is started with a lower dose. Patients on other drugs must be titrated to an appropriate dosage with the help of a doctor. North Drug Mart now has discount Purinethol that is available at a standard dosage of 50 mg.
