Trileptal Information
Trileptal is an anti-epileptic drug or anti-convulsant drug. It is used as an individual agent or as combination therapy with other anti-convulsants. The drug is used for treating the partial seizures in adult patients (as monotherapy or adjunctive therapy). Also, generic drug is used for treating partial seizures in patients aged 4 years and more (with epilepsy) as a monotherapy. In children 2 years and older (with epilepsy), the drug is used as an adjunctive therapy. The drug acts by reduction of nerve impulses which cause seizures. Trileptal Side Effects and Precautions
Common (or the less serious) side effects of Oxcarbazepine include mild vomiting, mild nausea, diarrhea, stomach ache, blurred vision, trouble concentrating, mental slowing, shaking, tremors, drowsiness, dizziness or skin rashes. Other commonly occurring effects of Trileptal are problems with balance, speech or coordination. Serious effects of the drug are increased seizures, unusual weakness, bruising/ bleeding easily, swollen glands, fever, flu-like signs, sore throat, headache, severe blisters or peeling/ reddening of the skin. Oxcarbazepine may also cause less urination and jaundice-like signs including yellowing of the skin and eyes. Let your doctor know immediately if you have confusion, headache, hallucination, no appetite, muscular pain or severe seizures. Also, get medical help if you have allergic reactions. Dosage Information For Trileptal
In pediatric patients aged 2-16 years, the adjunctive therapy with Trileptal is based on the body weight. For patients with < 20 kg body weight the starting dose is 16 mg/kg to 20 mg/kg. For body weight 20-29 kg the dose is 900 mg/day; for 29.1-39 kg the dose is 1200 mg/day; for body weight > 39 kg the dose is 1800 mg/day. In adults the treatment begins with 600 mg/day dose BID.
