Aricept is a reversible and a centrally acting acetyl-cholinesterase inhibitor. It is used for treating dementia that is associated with Alzheimer’s disease. The drug is effective in patients who have mild, moderate as well as severe Alzheimer’s disease. The enzyme acetyl-cholinesterase acts by breaking down of a neurotransmitter known as acetylcholine. The generic drug allows an improvement in the cholinergic functions by allowing higher concentrations of acetylcholine (which is associated with learning and memory) within the brain of the patients with Alzheimer’s disease. Aricept Side Effects and Precautions

Less serious (rather common side effects) effects of Donepezil are diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, muscle cramps, feeling tired, loss of appetite or insomnia (sleeping problems). Dosage Information For Aricept

For treating patients with moderate-severe Alzheimer’s disease, the drug dose is 10 mg or 23 mg, as directed by the physician. The dosage of 23 mg/ day should not be exceeded.
