Description of Eldepryl

Eldepryl belongs to the class of MAO inhibitors and its generic name is Selegiline. Available in the form of aqua blue oral capsules, each 5mg capsule also contains citric acid, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose and lactose. Do not buy Eldepryl if you have an allergy to any of these ingredients.

Indications & Dosage of Eldepryl

Eldepryl is used for treating symptoms associated with Parkinson’s disease, such as muscle stiffness, tremors, on-off problems, and loss of normal movements. By treating these symptoms, the medicine improves your motion range, as well as enhances your ability to exercise, dress and walk. Your doctor may advise you to take some other drugs such as carbidopa and levodopa too along with Eldepryl. The drug works by preventing breakdown of dopamine in the patient’s brain, a lack of which is associated with Parkinson’s disease.

Usually, you will be recommended to take one Eldepryl 5mg capsule at breakfast and one at lunch. This totals to Eldepryl 10mg per day. However, the dosage may vary, depending on your personal requirements and medical condition.

Side Effects & Interactions of Eldepryl

Some of the side effects commonly associated with Eldepryl include:

• Weakness, dizziness
• Stuffy or runny nose
• Sleep problems or insomnia
• Constipation
• Back pain
• Ulcers or mouth sores
• Pain while swallowing

These are commonly experienced side effects of Eldepryl. However, inform your doctor at once if any of these worsen or persist. Also seek medical attention immediately if you develop any serious side effects of Eldepryl. Such side effects include:

• Hallucinations
• Lightheadedness, fainting
• Irritability, agitation or restlessness
• Twitching movements in muscles
• Difficulty or painful urination
• Sudden severe headache, problems with balance or speech, blurred vision, confusion, chest pain, vomiting, nausea, sudden weakness, or numbness on one side of the body, seizures or convulsions

Some hypersensitive patients may suffer from an allergic reaction triggered by Eldepryl. Symptoms of such a reaction would include hives, severe dizziness, facial swelling or difficulty breathing. Stop taking the capsules if you have any of these symptoms. Seek medical help if needed.

Some drugs may worsen your condition if taken together with Eldepryl. Such drugs include carbamazepine, nafcillin, Phenobarbital, cold medicines or diet pills (e.g. pseudoephedrine or ephedrine), rifampin or antidepressants (e.g. amitriptyline, duloxetine or imipramine). Other than these, inform your doctor about all the drugs you are taking at present, including prescription and non-prescription drugs, health supplements and herbal preparations.

Warnings & Precautions of Eldepryl

Before you buy Eldepryl, inform your doctor if you have peptic ulcers, severe or frequent headaches, high blood pressure, heart problems, congestive heart failure, cerebrovascular disease like stroke, adrenal gland tumor, or history of heart attack. Also inform your doctor beforehand if you have a bleeding problem, mental or mood disorder, diabetes, overactive thyroid or liver disease.

As Eldepryl causes dizziness, avoid driving a vehicle, operating a machine or doing any such task that requires complete alertness, otherwise a serious accident may take place. To minimize this side effect, avoid alcoholic beverages and rise slowing from a lying or sitting position.
