Ultravate belongs to a class of drugs called corticosteroids. It has anti-inflammatory property and is also known to have vasoconstriction abilities. The drug is used topically as a cream or ointment. It is used in the treatment of inflammations of the skin. Also, it is indicated for the relief of pruritic-manifestations of dermatoses that occurs in response to the corticosteroids. The drug acts by inducing the phospholipase-A2 inhibitory proteins known as lipocortins, which are involved in the biosynthesis of PG (prostaglandins) and leukotrienes. The PG and leukotrienes are two potent mediators of inflammation. Brand or generic Ultravate acts by reducing the effects of these inflammatory agents in the body. Common side effects of the Ultravate drug are swelling of the hair follicles, irritation around the mouth, softening/ thinning of the skin, spider veins, tingling or numbness and stretch marks. The drug is applied to the affected area of the skin and rubbed in gently, until the drug is absorbed completely.
