Description of Metrocream

Metrocream is a topical application containing Metronidazole as its active ingredient. Each gram of the cream contains 7.5mg of the drug. The medicine belongs to the class of imidazole antibacterial agents, classified therapeutically as antibacterial and antiprotozoal agents. The emollient cream consists of emulsifying wax, benzyl alcohol, isopropyl palmitate, glycerin, lactic acid, sorbitol solution, purified water and sodium hydroxide. Do not buy Metrocream if you have an allergy to any of these ingredients.

Indications & Dosage of Metrocream

Metrocream is a topical medication used for treating inflammatory pustules and papules caused due to rosacea, which is a type of adult acne. The drug works by decreasing swelling or inflammation caused by the condition, so that the number, swelling and redness of the pimples are relieved.

Apply a thin layer of Metrocream on the affected skin two times a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. Do not forget to wash the affected area with a mild cleaner before applying Metrocream.

You should complete the full course of the prescription, even if your condition improves before that time is up. If you stop using Metrocream before the completion of treatment, the condition may relapse.

Side Effects & Interactions of Metrocream

Less serious side effects associated with Metrocream include:

  • Mild stinging or burning at the site of application
  • Tingling or numbness in feet or hands
  • Stuffy nose, cough, cold symptoms, throat soreness
  • Vaginal discharge or itching
  • Headache
  • Itchy, scaly or dry skin
  • Nausea
  • Metallic taste in mouth

These are mild side effects of the drug, but you must inform your doctor at once if any of these worsen or persist, or if you develop severe burning or stinging at the site of application.

Some patients may develop an allergic reaction after applying Metrocream, and you must discontinue using the medicine at once if you have suffer from it. Seek medical help if needed.

Metrocream should not be used if you are already taking any blood thinners such as warfarin at the present time, as drug interactions may occur. Apart from this, inform your doctor about all the other drugs you use, especially other topical applications and herbal preparations.

Warnings & Precautions of Metrocream

Your doctor will not recommend you to buy Metrocream if you have an allergy to any of its ingredients, or to any nitroimidazole antibiotics (e.g. tinidazole). Inform your doctor beforehand if you have a history of blood disorder such as blood dyscrasias.

Pregnant women should use Metrocream only if clearly indicated, as it is not yet known whether this medicine is safe for such women and the unborn child or not.

Breastfeeding mothers should not use this drug, as it passes into breast milk and may cause harm to the nursing infant.

As your skin’s sensitivity to sunlight may increase during treatment with Metrocream, you should apply a sunscreen and wear protective clothes before going out in the sun.
